educate
verb ed·u·cate \ ˈe-jə-ˌkāt \
The first written record of the word education is found in the 1530s with the word coming from the Latin word ducere, meaning “to lead”.
It has a few variations.
Educare - "e" means out and "ducare" is to lead, train, bring up or draw out.
Educatio and Educationis -is the action of bringing up or rearing.
Educatum- "education" is something which is taught to you by someone .
The overall definition of education is the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgement, and generally of preparing oneself or someone else for life.
In my world I classify this definition of education into 2 major groups, "formal" and "informal" .Formal being traditional education learnt inside a classroom, and informal" being things that I learn through some sort of interaction, by doing, watching and learning through others outside of the traditional "formal " situation.
As an educator , I always try to be knowledgeable about the topics that I am trying to educate others about, but in some situations this is not always possible. However, I am "wise" enough to know how to obtain information, how to manipulate it and how to present it . Education can occur anywhere and at anytime, and the method and the gains will be different for everyone. As with the definitions above, "leading" yourself or the process of educating yourself to gain knowledge is a skill that requires constant learning or "acquisition" of information.
With my Future Learning Space it will be important for me to find out what kind of learning I will focus on and what benefit it will be for my students. I need to ask how they like learning, will it be formal or informal and can it enhance my students environment in some way. Do we need books or can I call upon cultural influences?
The question still remains..What is the meaning of education to you?
