Teachers Without Borders is a non profit organisation founded by Fred Mednick Ph.D, in 1999 .The organisation connects teachers to information ,and each other, in order to bring about social change - and close the education divide on a global scale. It provides professional development courses to Teachers and connects those who want to make a difference to education around the world. It has 9 initiatives that it focuses on and teachers are the ones that conceive, lead and manage these initiatives.
I have chosen to focus on the initiative of Child Friendly Spaces. The Child Friendly Space initiative brings teachers into the safe spaces to assist with educational and social needs in times of crisis or emergency. These spaces can help children return to a normal routine by offering activities, games and informal education. In my Mind Map below I have put down some thoughts about how a childs' needs can be met and considerations to keep in mind in times of crisis.
The founder of TWB, Fred Mednick , believes teachers are the largest professionally trained group in the world( around 60 million) and are often first responders in emergencies and natural disasters, which is why he connects them to create resources for those in crisis. Resources such as the Future Learning Spaces that EDFD459 are producing.
"Brains are evenly distributed around the world, but education is not. From that moment on, Teachers Without Borders would connect those brains in order to fill gaps on their own terms. Their voices would be heard. We would find a way to encourage sharing and scale the intimacy of teacher professional development.
Over the past 17 years, they, like thousands of Teachers Without Borders members, have embraced a vision of hope and possibility"
"Educators are the difference between a crisis and a catastrophe"
(Mednick. F 2016)
My final assessment for edfd459 requires us to investigate an organisation called Teachers Without Borders (TWB), and how we can create a Learning Space within one of it's 9 initiatives.
